Careening in the Kitchen

Yesterday afternoon, dressed in her black dress and black shoes, Evelynn decided that she had something she needed to do in the kitchen and that she needed to do it at top speed.

"Full speed ahead!" her brain cried to her feet as her whole body geared up for the big charge. Off like a rocket she sprang from the living room to toward the kitchen. I must say I was jealous of all her energy.

From the corner of my eye I saw Evelynn's feet lift of the ground and heard the resulting crash.

The problem with Evelynn's black shoes is that she often slips while wearing them. This of course had happened again, and unfortunately her superman dive ended with her face hitting the cabinet door.

Geneen, who was in the kitchen responded to Evleynn's cries by lifting her up. Trying to calm a screaming child she soothed and asked, "Are you okay?"

(sob)"I," (big gulp) "want my," (sob) "shoes on."

In the course of diving into the counter and being picked up by mom Evelynn had lost both of her pretty black shoes. Once Geneen put her down Evelynn replaced her shoes and stopped crying.

All that fuss over shoes? Heaven help me raise these daughters.
