Last night/this morning was a tough one for the Jacobson household. Evelynn got up repeatedly in the night and came in to our room to stand mutely at the foot of our bed until we noticed her, then cried when we tried to put her back in bed. Obviously tired, she wouldn't fall asleep in our bed either but kept tossing and turning although not playing with us which usually happens when she gets into bed with us. In my befuddled mind I was annoyed, to put it mildly. Then I was even more annoyed when all the commotion woke up Eloise who wanted to eat and then play. We tried putting her in bed with us as well, but she just ended up playing. Since I was very tired I didn't notice that the behavior of Evelynn did not match the behavior of Eloise, like it usually would if she had just woken up in the night just because she wasn't tired (of course I'm never very observant at 1:00, 2:00, or 3:00 in the morning). This morning Evelynn pulled herself out of bed, went into the bathroom and began asking for a band-aid. When I asked her where the owie was, she pointed at both ears and said, "Right here." Oh I felt bad. Upon closer inspection I found some gunk had come out of one ear. The poor kid was a mess. The doctor pronounced it as a double ear infection. No fun, and now everyone is tired and crabby.
In other news, the hand of the Lord had been very evident in our extended family. A few weeks ago my mother-in-law had a sever sinus infection that caused her eardrums to rupture. Because of this she went to an ear-nose-and throat specialist that noticed a lump on the side of her neck in her lymph node. They took a small biopsy which said that there was a 15% chance it was cancerous. So they took her into surgery and removed half of it to do further testing. We found out yesterday that it is cancer, but it's a kind that is one of the easiest to treat and defeat. They will go in again in a few weeks and remove the rest of the lymph node, and then she will take one or two radioactive pills that will kill all remaining cells, and then it's done. I've never heard of cancer that would be kicked that quickly. But it all came about because she got a very bad sinus infection. Doug's mom is usually a person who worries about things, but she has felt such peace and reassurance through this whole ordeal, like it was just the Lord's way of protecting her. Thank goodness for the tender mercies and miracles of the Lord in our lives.
